Becoming a FireFighter
There’s something different about the behavior of firefighters. When you meet one you notice their chivalry and demeanor. They just seem to carry themselves differently.Teran Moore, a firefighter for the Lewisville Fire Department, has all those positive attributes despite being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 24.Even with having a disease that often cripples people, Moore, now 34, has maintained resilience within himself to not only lead a normal life, but is able to continue his duties as a firefighter and student minister at Cross Timbers Community Church.Moore recently published his first book Saved by the Flame:How the Values of being a Firefighter have saved my Life. It’s a short read, only 80 pages, but it has more impact then most self-help books. Many authors write 400 pages of fluff just to pad their paycheck but Moore delivers a deep, insightful and powerful view into his world in a short amount of time. Not only does he expose how the values of being a firefighter helped him, he also includes how religion got him through his troubles. Although he uses religion as a background for his philosophies, he doesn’t preach. Even if you’re not religious you can still take various lessons he’s learned and apply it to your own life in your own way.Moore sat down with me to further explain his trials in life and how he plans to continue battling despite his circumstances.GZ: It seems you started your firefighting career at the same time you began your relationship with God. How do those two co-relate?
